Latest Outages

This month we had two serious outages each lasting for several hours. Both were caused by our main hosting provider. This is unacceptable! Because of this we are working on a solution to get a higher service uptime.

Our application is splitted to several independent servers but this does not help if the whole datacenter is offline. So we will start splitting our application to different datacenters across the globe. Currently all conversion servers are hosted in europe, we are currently looking for a suitable provider in the united states.

YouTube Error

Currently all conversions will fail due to YouTube’s current unavailability. All video pages return a “502 Server Error”. We are pretty sure that YouTube will fix this issue soon. Once they fixed it we will start cleaning up all faulty conversions. This will need several hours so don’t be astonished if you see an increased error rate.

Update: Everything is back to normal. We have removed all faulty conversions from our system.

Update 2 (4:46AM PDT): YouTube is throwing errors again.

Update 3 (5:03AM PDT): Conversions work again. We have a slightly increased error rate at the moment.

Update 4 (10:09AM PDT): High error rate again. According to Google Trends this seems to be a global issue. “YouTube down” is a “Hot Search”.

Todays Outage

Today we had a small outage. During a timeframe of 30-45 minutes one of our conversion servers couldn’t process any new videos. We expect this issue to be resolved but we are going to watch this specific server closely.

Upcoming Maintenance

As announced on our main page there will be a planned outage starting at 1:00 PM PDT today. The outage will persist up to two hours and is part of a maintance that will improve the scalability and reliability of our service.

Basically our whole service will become read-only. You will only be able to download mp3 files that are already cached by our servers. You can use our little search engine to search for cached mp3’s. If you try to submit a new YouTube URL for conversion you will get the following error message.

Increased limit

Today we have increased our limit from 12 to 15 conversions per half hour. Please note that only “real” conversions are limited. If the requested video is already cached by our servers this request does not count towards the limit.

Our limit also differs from other services. If you have converted 15 videos you don’t have to wait an half hour. It is relevant how much videos you have converted within the last 30 minutes, this means if you have converted 10 videos 28 minutes ago and 5 within the last minutes, than you only have to wait 2 minutes and than you can convert the next 10 videos.

Routing problems

Just a few minutes ago we had some serious routing problems. As far as we know only german users were affected and could not access our service. If you were also affected by this outage and don’t live in germany, please send us an email.

You can see a clear drop in our request graph for that timeframe.

Addon update

We have updated our addons to implement an often mentioned wish. From now on we will open a new tab if you hit the convert button. If you think that you have an great idea too, tell us.

The chrome extension should be updated within the next hours and the firefox addon has been updated but we need to wait for the approval by the moderators. If you really want the new version of the firefox addon, you can get it here.

Today we have published our extension for Google Chrome, you can find it on our brand new addon page. Just click on “Install Addon” and you can use it.

Software problems

We currently have some issues with our infrastructure and cannot serve any progress information. As far as we know they are caused by faulty memory. We are working hard to resolve them.

The conversions should not be impacted by this issue and should work as always except the missing progress information.

Firefox Addon

What most of our users don’t know is that we also have an addon for firefox. It adds a button to every YouTube video page, by clicking on it you will be redirected to our service and a conversion process will be started automaticaly.

Performance Upgrade

In the past days we have heavily increased our server capacity. Today we have more than 15 times the capacity we had last week. This results in much lower error rates and shorter wait times.
